General Information

In my class your grade will reflect how much Spanish you know.  Therefore, it is essential that you continuously learn the content.  If you're not consistently studying outside of class, you will more than likely not succeed in learning any Spanish and in turn receive a less than desirable grade.  There is no way around this.  YOU HAVE TO STUDY and study effectively.

If you find yourself with a lower grade than you'd like, the ways to get your grade up in my class involve you taking steps to get help to catch up on content and actually learn Spanish.  There are no quick fixes.

  • Come in before school, during lunch, or after school for one on one help from me.
  • Be quick to make up any missing or late assignments, especially test items.
  • Be prompt in retaking any quizzes that you've done poorly on.
  • Do your homework every day, and do it with genuine effort & without a translator.

Because most parents don't have much knowledge of the Spanish language, parents can help their student most by making sure he/she is doing the daily assignments and preparing for quizzes/tests.  Coming in for help from me is also an area that many times requires parental urging despite constant pleas from me in class.  Sign up to get Remind texts from me that will go out only before quizzes or tests.  Simply text the message @spanish16t to the number 81010 for Spanish 1.  I remove all parents and students from these texts in May every year.

Other than these measures, you can most certainly attempt practicing vocab words with your student.  You can also read through their grammar notes and culture points with him/her to practice the concepts.

Before considering a private tutor, please consider your student using the best resource possible, and it's free: ME.  I'm here before school, during lunch, and after school to help.  And please keep in mind that even the best tutor can't learn the content for the student.  He/She cannot avoid a certain degree of memorization and study when learning Spanish.

Spanish 1 is an all year course.

Yes, Spanish is an elective.  It is not a required subject for graduation from CHS.  However, and it's a big "however", you need credits to graduate, and Spanish is most certainly for credit.  It also factors into your GPA.  Spanish 1 is required to graduate with a diploma with honor's distinction.

I can be reached most easily through email:  I check it several times a day.  You can also call the school and leave a message that I will return as soon as possible.  My planning period is every day from 10:39-11:25 (4th hour) with the exception of Tuesdays when teachers have a weekly meeting during our plan.

Spanish 1 is a foundational class that sets students up for continued learning of the language (levels 2 & 3).  On average, it takes about 7 years of intense, devoted study to become fluent in a language, so you should certainly not expect this result by May.  Your student (if an achieving student) will be able to communicate on a very basic level in Spanish.  He/She will be able to conjugate verbs in the present tense, including irregulars.  He/She will have a wealth of vocabulary and will be able to talk about basic culture from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Ecudador.

This claim is completely dependent on one's definition of "study" and how consistent he/she has been in his/her "studying".  I would conclude that "studying" did not actually take place.  Glancing over a vocab sheet is not studying.  Partially reviewing a concept or topic is also not studying.  However, keep in mind that if you haven't been studying consistently from the very beginning, there are many challenges you will face that could very well trump the current content you prepared for this time.  This is all a part of the dangerous "snowball effect" of learning a language.  Each time content is neglected, it can't be built upon.  This class is a classic case of a subject where content builds upon itself.  While each chapter test is specifically designed to test that chapter's vocab, grammar and culture, there is no way for the test to not contain previous vocab and grammar.  Many times, there is no way to know what to answer when you don't know what is being asked because you never learned the previous stuff.  This is also the reason the class naturally tends to get harder and harder.  There's more and more to know and be able to recall/use.  Staying on top of it is key to having the freedom to only have to prepare for what is the current chapter's content.
