Concurrent Enrollment

Smart Start

Who we are

  • The Smart Start concurrent enrollment program was created for local students to earn early college credit. This partnership of UAFS and local school districts to provide an opportunity for our high school students is growing annually. Through the program the university offers general education courses as provided by the Arkansas Course Transfer System such as Composition I & II, US History I & II, College Algebra, Plane Trigonometry, Speech, Psychology along with other general education courses all taught by university faculty. These courses are delivered to students on their high school campus through an online course or from UAFS faculty traveling to the high school.
  • Throughout the program students gain the knowledge of performing at the university level as well as gain confidence to advance in their collegiate experience. Students in the program have the ability to begin college with 18+ hours and potential complete college ahead of schedule.

Who we serve

  • The program is open to juniors and seniors at participating high schools. Student’s entering the program must have college level placement with an ACT 19, or an equivalent placement score. Students must also maintain a 2.0 GPA throughout the program.

What you need to know

  • Smart Start concurrent enrollment is a unique opportunity for students to earn high school credit while also obtaining college credit hours. These courses differ from Advanced Placement (AP) coursework in that students are actually enrolled and participating in a college course taught by university faculty. Another difference is that regardless of exam scores, the student earns the grade given at the end of the semester. Smart Start courses are general education courses that are the traditional semester in length rather than the full academic year. These courses are mainly online offerings, although some locations offer the course onsite at the high school rather than online. This program is offered at 13 local high schools and course options vary at each location.
  • Courses taken through the Smart Start Program are offered for the same level credit as those offered on the UAFS campus. In turn, we ask our concurrent students to meet the same expectations we set for our degree-seeking students. These courses require you to think, interact and learn at a higher level than you would in a regular high school class. They will be more challenging, in-depth and require more time and work.
